Day 04

The AH-64D Apache Longbow Gunship, call sign Tornado is an attack helicopter used by Blackwatch and the Marines during the containment operation on Manhattan Island. Alex Mercer can skyjack these during gameplay.

Overview[]

This single-rotor gunship is equipped with a flexible mounted 30mm M230 Chain Gun, Hydra 70 general-purpose unguided 70 mm (2.75 in) rockets, and AGM 114 Hellfire anti-tank guided missiles. Empty, the Apache weighs nearly 11,000 lbs. It is manned by two crewmen, a pilot and a gunner.

Gameplay[]

Prototype[]

Alex about to skyjack a gunship.

As the island slides into chaos, Apaches replace Blackhawks in their strike team role. The guided missile is a huge threat to the player as it is capable of depleting a quarter of the player's total health points if the attack strikes directly. Helicopters can follow a fleeing Alex across the city easily, making it very difficult to escape them unless the player finds a covered area and transforms into an uncompromised disguise.

Prototype 2[]

The gunship in Prototype 2 appears in green and red zone strike teams, but operates alongside the Blackhawk, rather than replacing it altogether. When commandeered, only the chain gun and guided missiles are available. Alternatively, Heller can weaponize the missiles to use on foot. They are very effective against other helicopters, since they will track its movement and destroy it with a single hit. Heller can counter the missile with his shields, deflecting them toward a targeted enemy or reflecting them back at the gunship.

Notes[]

  • The AH-64 Apache is technically not used by the Marines in real life, who use the AH-1Z Cobra as its primary attack helicopter. The Apache is in fact used by the US Army. The Apache's presence on Manhattan suggests possible joint forces involvement with the Army and the Air Force (as USAF F-22 Raptors are tasked with overflight missions over the waters surrounding Manhattan).
  • When skyjacking, Alex or Heller will throw the gunner out the side and proceed to consume the pilot in the gunship.
